Bream were definitely around to be caught with 61 teams weighing in a total of 198 bream for the day. Day one in the boating section belonged to Deans Tackle and Outdoors – Damien Skeen and Wayne Skeen – who weighed in a beautiful 4.62kg 5/5 bag. Bream Attacks – Michael Borg and Geoff Borg – were placed second with a respectable 5/5 4.26kg bag. Rounding out the top three in the boating section were Gamakatsu/Shimano’s Nick Reay and Lucas Pratt with another 5/5 bag weighing 4.095kg. The kayak section saw I fish’s Jason Lambert take the lead with a 3/3 2.62kg bag. In second place was Jonathon Chen with a nice 2/3 1.87kg bag. Third place was held by Sailing Scene’s Andrew Death with another 3/3 1.62kg bag. After a great dinner at the Greenwell Point Bowling Club (not to mention raising over $800 for Breast Cancer Awareness) Sunday morning saw anglers head to Greenwell Point for day 2 of the SSBS Grand Final on the challenging Shoalhaven River. For once the Shoalhaven River event greeted us with fine weather and anglers headed off in wonderful sunny conditions. The weigh-in was held on the new Shimano tank which was an amazing spectacle for anglers and the community alike. With a combined two day bag result for the Grand Final anglers were keen to see who would take home the $4000 cash, Hobie Outback mirage and two trips to join the Shimano team aboard Triton for the boating section and $1000 cash, Hobie Outback mirage and a trip to join the Shimano team aboard Triton for the Kayak section. The Kayak section belonged to Andrew Death who came from third on day one to take the winners position with a combined bag of 3.195kg. Second place was retained by Jonathon Chen with a combined bag weight of 3.085kg. Jonathon also secured the Hobie Kayak Big bream with an amazing 1.145kg basin bream. Third place went to I Fish’s Jason Lambert with a combined bag weight of 2.62kg. In the boating section Deans Tackle and Outdoors Damien Skeen and Wayne Skeen held onto the day one lead to finish in the top spot with a combined bag weight of 6.865kg. Second place was taken out by consistent place getters Compleat Angler Batemans Bay/Squidgie Pro Range’s Craig Johnson and Jason Mayberry with a combined bag weight of 6.230kg. Rounding out the podium with their third place was Bream Attack’s Michael Borg and Geoff Borg with a 5.895kg combined weight bag. The Damiki Big Bream Prize was taken out by Damiki/Pontoon 21’s Scott Brown with an impressive 1.465kg basin bream. At the conclusion of the 2011 Squidgie Southern Bream Series Basin Lure and Fly Anglers would like to thank the sponsors of this series: Shimano Australia, Hobie Fishing, Lowrance, Evinrude, Damiki, Edgewater Boats, Skeeter Boats, Bundaberg Rum, Flowrite systems, Culburra Bait and Tackle, Fishing World Magazine, Ugly Fish Sunglasses and Southern Insight, without whom we couldn’t bring you this series. We wish all anglers a safe remainder for 2011 and hope to see you all again for the 2012 series. Details of which will be appearing on our website www.ssbs.basinlureandfly.org.au over the coming weeks.

RESIDENTS REPORT : Jim Barrie

It has been a while I know but as you all know there has been a heap going on.

We have run a couple of great events over the past months and are about to run yet another Squidgy Southern Bream Series this weekend week at Port Hacking.

The Series first round found us hosting 84 teams in the Georges River. All the Committee’s hard work is paying off. I will leave filling you in on the rest to the other committee.

We used the Flathead Classic as a trial run for the club’s new Series trailer. This trailer started off as a box trailer and over two weeks and a lot of late nights it became a very professional display of what this club and its members are capable of. To anyone who hasn’t seen the trailer on display it will be flying the flag for the club next weekend in Bateman’s Bay, but for those not travelling down there come 18 th of April we will be using the trailer at St Georges Basin at Palm Beach (round 4).

The Flathead Classic 2010 was attended by 32 teams. Numbers were down with a lot of our members fishing the BETS Hawkesbury round but they all still put in effort with preparations. We attracted families from Canberra to Sydney and the weather was definitely an improvement on what blew up on Saturday afternoon. The largest Flathead was coaxed in by the flathead whisperer Ian Philips and measured 900mm and weighed 5.795 kg. Ian and Greg Reid returned this awesome fish to the same place they caught it…. SOMEWHERE IN THE BASIN. Biggest flathead on fly was won by Glenn Godwin with a 680mm and 2.060kg. Ryan Jamieson took out the Heaviest Flathead (junior) with an 815mm and 3.855kg (after late penalty), Ryan was fighting this flathead and it took him over the finish time, so the last cast does pay off. I bet it was one of the most nervous fights he has had in a while. The day threw a few different seasons at us, I say this because it just isn’t right to be fishing in summer and shivering. Thanks to everyone for helping out throughout the day with people offering to cook BBQ’s and sell tickets. A special thanks to Scott Sharpe, Wes Murphy and Amy Barrie for staying on the shore all day taking care of all our fish.

Amy was truly rewarded at the end of the day when the raffle was drawn. She has now added to the garage a Brand new Hobie Outback thanks to Hobiecat Australasia and Outdoors and Beyond. The raffle was a great fund raiser for the club and with businesses helping us out it has made this another good start to the year for the club. Amy and the Hobie hit the water after everyone went home from the Bateman’s Bay round of the SSBS. The next big purchase will be a set of roof racks.

The Squidgy Southern Bream series really showed the club to be capable of running a very professional event, as is always the case. We have the support and knowledge of some of the biggest companies involved in Bream tournaments in Australia. We had the biggest tidal movement of the year on round one. Well that was something we couldn’t control. Everyone from the club helped and made helped spread the load. So thanks everyone and look forward to round three at Port Hacking.

Currently we have released the new SSBS site and are about to release the new Basin Lure and Fly website hopefully in the next few days. It looks great and we have to thank Duade For his excellent work on both sites. Also with our site update we are also giving Wolindilly Bas clubs site a revamp. So on the Web side things have been Busy. The new basin site will remain at the same address

The new Squidgy Southern Bream Series Site as follows http://www.ssbs.basinlureandfly.org.au

A quick fishing report from me:

I can’t find any flathead over 60cm. Big bream have worked me out and know how to avoid me. I keep finding 50cm Trevally and heaps of Tarwine.

I am looking forward to getting back into the Bay with reports backed up by pictures of good Snapper. Hope that breaks the drought for me.

Cheers

Jim

SECRETARY REPORT: SCOTT SHARPE

Well what a start to the year we have already two of the biggest comps our club hold have either started or been. The flathead classic was a raving success and the thought of a field as keen as it was in weather that was could not have been thought of. a big congratulations to all the winners on the day (except for Amy because I wrote here ticket out and also spent a little bit on trying to win the kayak myself so bar humbug to you hahaha ) no well done aim!!

The second was the start of the SSBS which was held at the Georges river as most would already know and that two had a feeling of worry put over all the committee as it was our first that our little club that could had held and I’m here to tell you buy 5:40am after driving since 2am I had a feeling that maybe we had bitten of more than we could chew and it wasn’t the amount of people it was the lack of them. But buy 6:00am it looked somewhat like the Sydney boat show and the feeling of worry about not having enough people to participated turned into a feeling of “HOLY CRAP WERE IN TROUBLE NOW” but as always everyone had a job and even those that didn’t show found one and I thank you for that buy the way. Everything couldn’t have went smoother and the site was I must say a little awe inspiring to see 64 boat teams and 20yakas lining up for their first crack at the SSBS round .

Whilst on the bank Amy and myself did the mundane jobs that go with setting up for the return all the while in the back of my mind I was thinking how good it would be to be out there hitting the water with everyone else but the usual call of “HEY SCOOTER CAN YOU??” Bought me back to where I was and the job in hand.

All in all it was an awesome day and a day a few of our local crew will not forget for many a day to come I’m sure!! (This will get covered in more detail as the newsletter goes along) Some of the up and coming things to think about are!

The point score weekends

The next rounds of the SSBS

Something also worth noting is a email that is getting around and most tackle shops should/will do have copies but if you don’t it’s in the newsletter so have a read as it is a good thing I think.

Well that about wraps my ends up anything I can help you with don’t hesitate to call!!(Just not at 10:30pm like guy)

RECORDERS REPORT :

Well, a lot has gone on since the last newsletter. As you would be well aware of, Basin Lure and Fly Anglers have taken on what was known as the Squidgy Series and has been running the Squidgy Southern Bream Series. Round 1 took place on the Georges River on the 24th of January 2010. A huge field took to the water with some heavy bags weighed in. Congratulations to Team Onagain Neil Kelly and Andrew Hansler on their 5.16kgs bag of 5 Bream for the boaters. Kayaks section was won by Carl Dubios with a full bag of 3 Bream weighing in at 2.175kgs. Round 2 was held on the Clyde River, Batemans Bay on the 26th Feb. 46 Boats and 18 Kayaks participated in the event. Team Culburra Bait and Tackle 2, Grant Kime and Scott Brown won the day for the boaters with a bag of 5 Bream weighing in at 3.27kgs. For the Kayaks Team Hobiesports, Daniel Holder claimed victory with the only full bag of 3 Bream weighed in at 1.15kgs. We had a fantastic turn out for both rounds, looking forward to the next Round on the Hacking on the 7th of March. The club was lucky enough to have a new box trailer donated which we have transformed into a stage area for the presentations and weigh in’s. We needed to step things up for this year with a more professional look. We have picked up some new sponsors this year for the comps and have held onto some of the old sponsors. These include: Culburra Bait and Tackle, Damiki Fishing Tackle, Shimano, Skeeter, Lowrance, Hobie, Mad Keen and Fishing World.

For those who are not aware we run a monthly point score competition from January to November. Anglers fish for 3 Bream, 3 Flathead, and one of every other species, with upgrading permitted. Lengths are recorded and all fish returned safely to their homes. There have been two monthly point scores for the year so far. First one was held on the Basin; Tom Mclean took out the first round with a score of 3518 points for the men. For the women Chris Mclean came in with a score of 2515 points. The juniors was lead by Travis Balzan with a score of 829 points followed by his brother Jake Balzan with a score of 674 points and Tom Keighley with a score 640 points. The second point score was held on the Basin for February. Ryan Jamieson won with a score of 3700 points followed by Paul Farmer who is leading comfortably after 2 rounds with a total score of 6565 points.

Our information nights are held on the second Wednesday night of every month commencing at 7:30pm at the Meriton St Hall St Georges Basin. All are welcome to attend. It’s shaping up to be a big year for the club. We have taken on many new members this year, the support is appreciated.

Presidents Report

Bring on Summer I say! We are all looking forward to having a more aggressive bite both in the shallows and in the deep water. Reports and photo’s of large flathead 900mm plus being caught and released in the Basin. Other reports of fish over the metre mark being captured and not released. Oh well that is their right and we can’t take that away from them. Wes has knocked Scotty off the biggest flathead for the year with a 913mm Flatty. Jason has fought and beaten a 1040mm Jewfish in the basin. A long fight and a sore back on 3lb main line. Wal is the man to follow for bream with consistent good bream over the 1 kg mark. Big whiting are also swallowing blades and the 40cm plus fish are definitely on the chew. Blades, blades and blades seem to be the flavour of the month for a majority of the feedback. The new eco gear shrimp is also landing the big lizards. The single hooks on the rear are definitely working and on several occasions targeting and large flathead with success.

The guy’s from Shimano ran a successful competition from Greenwell Point Bowling and Sports Club. There was lots of fantastic prizes on offer and everyone that fished really enjoyed it. The kids all walked away with prizes and I have to say that even the adults seemed to have their hands full at the end of the event. The competition targeted Bream, Jewfish, Luderick, Whiting, Snapper & Kingfish. Standout angler was Wal Balzan with a bag of bream weighing in at 5.030kg. Wal also took out the biggest Whiting and Blackfish. Anglers could fish the Basin or the Shoalhaven river and as we would expect the Basin and Wal shined. Mark Crompton took out the biggest Flathead taken from the River approx 700mm weighing in at 1.98kg. If you missed this year make sure you don’t miss next year. If you have kids all the better as that is what they want to see and they ensure every kid took at least one prize. Mossy had the big Shimano tank there and all fish were there on display.

The club has acquired some pumping equipment and is currently trying to source trailers and a tank so the club can build and have their own tank for the future. We are of course trying to do this at minimal cost but are working towards getting a large portion of the material donated. This tank will be a great asset for the club for our events like the Flathead Classic.

There is a lot currently going on with organising for up and coming events. Our Flathead classic will be held on the 24 th of January 2010 Australia Day long weekend The committee is meeting currently and we will decide on the dates for the Southern Bream series and have asked anglers for feedback on the forum. This information is greatly appreciated to all of those that have replied.

The away weekend for Grady’s has been moved to the Basin. It was planned for a interclub challenge with Wollondilly Bass earlier in the year but changes in club calendars has forced us to move it back to the Basin. We will try to pursue this next year, I will talk with Brett from WBC and Southern Bass so we can start up a interclub challenge and get some small trophy’s so the winners can have a bit more than just bragging rights.

A club raffle is being sourced as we speak. We have secured almost all prizes and I would like to have it finalized in the next week so we can start selling tickets at the up and coming Fishcare Family Fishing Day.

The Fishcare Family Fishing Day will be held on Sunday 25 October 2009 at the new Greenwell Point Boat Ramp (fingers crossed it is completed). The club has been asked to help with this event and I will be helping out with registrations and the weigh in. All entries must be received by Wednesday 19 October 2009 .

I have uploaded entry forms on the BLF website. Go to http://www.basinlureandfly.org.au/images/rec_fish_oct_2009.pdf

The Southern Bream Series Grand Final will be run next month. We had 108 anglers fish qualifying rounds this year and expect numbers to grown next year again. The Grand final is over two days. Our friend Tim Olsen has offered a discount to anglers fishing at his fantastic Palm Beach Tourist Park. There is a total of 52 anglers that have qualified.
Secretary’s report

Hi!Well all I can say is it’s all going forward and that is what you want to see when you’re in this position. As Jim has said in his report the up and coming year is looking good and many things are about to happen which I will get into shortly but for now I’ll just have a quick ramble about a few things.

The up and coming flathead classic is on the go as you know and I won’t go into it too much as Jim has covered it in the past report but raffle tickets will be out soon so please try to sell as many as you can as the money raised helps the club through the year with its on goings (not the bream section that is separate I will say just quietly) so please help in any way you can.

Speaking of the bream comps well in a way they have become the back bone of our club and without them I’m here to say the club would be up a certain creek without a paddle. They have got bigger and bigger and this year will be no different!!

This year will see some extra ordinary comps take hold being a lady’s day, a one lure comp day, a fancy dress day and a take a kid fishing day all well see a weekend set aside throughout the year which should be great.

Besides that everything is running along a-ok and hopefully this year will see some exciting things take place and all of our members big and small will be able to do what they love and that’s fishing what more can you ask!!

Cheers Scotty…
